A Practical Prompting Guide
Use context, role, examples, constraints, and review steps to get more reliable AI outputs.
A strong prompt gives the model enough context to understand the task and enough constraints to avoid guessing. The simplest structure is: goal, background, audience, format, examples, and success criteria.
Instead of asking, “Write a blog post about AI,” try: “Write a 900-word beginner article for small business owners explaining three ways AI can save admin time. Use short sections, avoid hype, and include a checklist at the end.” The second prompt gives the model a job it can actually aim at.
Examples are especially powerful. If you have a preferred tone, paste a short sample. If you have a desired format, show the format. If there are common mistakes, name them directly.
For important work, make prompting a two-step process. First ask for an outline or plan. Then approve or adjust it before asking for the final output. This catches wrong assumptions early and usually produces cleaner results.
