Tools directory

AI tools for the job you need to do

Find a useful starting point for writing, research, coding, creative work or automation. This is a selected directory, not an exhaustive list: each entry explains what a tool does, where it may fit and one trade-off worth considering.

Start with your task, not another subscription. Use the categories below, then follow our guides and published examples when you need more context.

Directory entries are researched summaries. A listing does not mean we have tested the tool. Where first-hand work is published, we link to the specific example or test.

Choose by task

I need help with a draft.

Start with an assistant if you need ideas or structure; use an editing tool if the draft already exists. Try the tools you already have before adding a specialist subscription.

I need an answer I can check.

Use web research to discover sources, paper-search tools to find studies, or a source notebook to question documents you already have. Open the supporting material: a citation is a route to evidence, not proof by itself.

I need to make or automate something.

Decide what the finished output must do: an editable image, a downloadable voiceover, a presenter video or a repeatable workflow. Check export, usage limits and review steps before paying.

AI assistants

Draft, explore ideas and work through questions. Check factual claims before relying on an answer.

Images & design

Create or edit visuals. Check the model, output controls and usage terms for your intended project.

Images & design

Adobe Firefly

Adobe’s creative service for generating and editing images and other media, with Adobe and partner models.

Good fit for
Exploring visual ideas alongside an Adobe workflow.
Our take
Check which model you select and the terms for that output; the Firefly interface does not make every model or result equivalent.

Access: Limited free access; paid plans.

Images & designModel family

Stable Diffusion

Model family, rather than one hosted app.

A family of image-generation models that can run locally or through compatible hosted services.

Good fit for
Technical users building a local or customised image workflow.
Our take
Expect setup work and computing costs; check the licence for the specific model and how you intend to use it.

Access: Model licence and hosting costs vary.

Coding

Get help inside an editor or build a prototype. Generated code still needs review and testing.

Coding

Cursor

An AI-oriented code editor with chat, assisted edits and agent workflows.

Good fit for
Developers willing to work in a separate AI-oriented editor.
Our take
Check the changes across files rather than trusting a plausible explanation; changing editors also has a workflow cost.
Coding

Replit

An AI-assisted environment for building and running apps, with publishing and hosting features.

Good fit for
Prototyping without first assembling a local development environment.
Our take
A working prototype still needs a deployment, security and ongoing-cost review before people rely on it.
Coding

Tabnine

An AI coding assistant with documented private-deployment options for organisations.

Good fit for
Organisations evaluating coding assistance and deployment control.
Our take
Use the deployment documentation to frame questions for the vendor; confirm current availability, supported editors and support arrangements.

Video

Distinguish generated scenes from presenter videos: they solve different production problems.

Audio & music

Choose between making music, generating a voice and editing an existing recording.

Audio & music

ElevenLabs

A service for generating speech and creating voice-based content, including narration and dubbing.

Good fit for
Producing a voiceover from an approved script.
Our take
Check pronunciation and pacing before publishing, and confirm the plan’s usage rights before using a voiceover commercially.

Access: Free plan with limits; commercial-use features depend on plan.

Audio & music

Suno

A service for generating songs with vocals and instruments from prompts.

Good fit for
Song sketches and musical experimentation.
Our take
Check downloads and intended-use rights before planning a finished release; generating a song is only one part of that workflow.

Access: Free generation access; downloads and rights depend on plan.

Writing & work

Improve a draft or work inside an existing workspace before adding another writing subscription.

Research & sources

Web discovery, paper search and questioning your own documents require different tools.

Research & sources

Consensus

A research search service for finding studies and exploring their findings with AI assistance.

Good fit for
Exploring research around a focused question.
Our take
Distinguish what an individual study found from a settled conclusion, and read the studies that matter to your decision.
Research & sources

Elicit

A research assistant for finding papers, summarising findings and comparing information across studies.

Good fit for
Building an initial evidence table from academic papers.
Our take
Check study design and extracted values against the original papers; a tidy table can still omit important context.

Access: Free Basic plan; paid upgrades.

Research & sources

Gemini Notebook

Formerly NotebookLM.

Google’s standalone research notebook for asking questions and developing summaries around your source material.

Good fit for
Working through a reading pack or a set of project documents.
Our take
Start with a clear source set, then check important answers against the originals; a source-focused workflow still needs your judgement.

Automation

Start with one repeatable task. Plan how you will review errors before connecting real workflows.

Automation

n8n

A workflow automation platform with AI integrations and options for self-hosting.

Good fit for
Teams that want to manage their own workflow infrastructure.
Our take
Self-hosting brings responsibility for maintenance and security; connecting an external AI service can still send data outside your server.

Access: Self-hosted Community edition has usage restrictions; running costs apply.

Access checked — n8n official source
Automation

Zapier

A platform for connecting apps and adding AI-assisted steps to repeatable workflows.

Good fit for
Adding a reviewed AI step to an existing app workflow.
Our take
Check the steps, integrations and charges your task needs; a free platform account does not include every AI feature.

Access: Free platform plan; AI features and paid options have separate limits.

How this directory works

How we choose tools

We select tools for a clear, practical use case and explain the trade-offs that matter to that task. Inclusion and placement cannot be bought. Tools are grouped by task and listed alphabetically within each category; the order is not a performance ranking.

What the entries mean

Descriptions and access notes are researched from official product information. “Our take” is our editorial judgement, not a claim of hands-on testing. When we publish a test or worked example, we link to that specific piece of work.

Access and corrections

Plans and availability change. Access notes show when they were checked and link to the official source; confirm the details for your account and region before paying. We omit plan claims we cannot verify confidently. Report a correction.

Affiliate relationships

The ElevenLabs link is an affiliate/referral link. We may earn a commission if you buy through it. An affiliate relationship does not purchase inclusion, placement or a favourable assessment.

Directory changes and former names

DALL·E: our former consumer-tool entry is now covered by ChatGPT, including its current image features. DALL·E remains a search alias, not a claim that ChatGPT’s current image feature is the same model.

NotebookLM: listed under its current name, Gemini Notebook. The former name remains searchable.

Udio: temporarily withheld from active recommendations while we reassess export availability and suitability. This is not a claim that Udio has shut down or been permanently excluded. Its official help page reported disabled downloads when checked on .
